OUR APPROACH

We understand that The Hawthorns is first and foremost a home for all of our residents.

Life in a care home should always be about choice. No one should just ‘end up’ in residential care.  Residents need to feel safe, secure and comfortable, whilst also knowing that the people surrounding them understand their needs and listen to them.

Our aim is to create a relaxed and homely atmosphere where residents can choose to live how they wish – whether this be having breakfast in bed, access to alcoholic drinks, taking part in hobbies.

We work closely with residents, families and other professionals to gather a life history and information. A person-centred care plan is built over time for every member of our home, enabling us, not only to ensure we meet the health needs of our residents, but also their social and emotional wellbeing. We strive to ensure that good quality life experiences can continue with us whilst also creating a family feel throughout the home.

Services Provided

Our services are tailored to the needs of our individual residents, but typically include:

  • Personal Care: our dedicated staff are trained to help with washing, dressing, bathing, toileting, laundry, and cleaning.

  • Meals: we are conscious of the need to ensure that residents receive nutritious and tasty meals. Our cooks prepare the menus weekly and residents are regularly asked for meal suggestions. Fresh fruit, drinks and snacks are also available at any time of the day or night. All special dietary needs are fully catered for, whether for medical or cultural reasons or just a resident’s preferred diet.

  • Social: we encourage visits, interactions with other Residents, friendships, and a range of social and leisure activities.

  • Medication: residents can ask us to look after their medication if they wish, or may choose to look after their own medications with the help and support of our staff as required.

  • Admin: We do not manage resident’s financial affairs, but if requested we will look after and monitor small sums of money such as their personal allowance, and arranging shopping for them.

  • Health: The Hawthorns is not registered to provide nursing care. However, we work closely with residents’ GP’s, Pharmacists, Dentists, Opticians, and Community Nurses to enable our residents to receive proper healthcare.

Facilities

  • Bedroom: Bedrooms are well-equipped and tastefully furnished, and have TV and nurse call point. Residents are also encouraged to bring along any personal items such as photographs, ornaments and pictures to add to the personal touch.

  • Lounge: Lounges are available for relaxing and socializing. Our spacious lounges are furnished with comfortable armchairs, coffee tables, TV, DVD player, music player, as well as a wide variety of reading material and a wide range of records, DVD’s and games. An iPad is available and staff can assist if required.

  • Garden: we have a well-maintained and secluded garden with ramped access. Residents are encouraged to use the garden. We also arrange activities in the garden during the summer months.

  • Stair Lifts – to enable Residents to access the upper floors independently or with support if required.

  • Emergency Call Alarm – all rooms have call points to bring help to individual residents as quickly as possible.

  • Housekeeping – our housekeeping service includes the cleaning of all communal areas, bedrooms, laundry, and all general maintenance.

  • Recreation – age is no barrier to recreational activities. We have a well-stocked store of card and board games, jigsaws and ball games, as well as an Alexa and iPad. We have regular discussion sessions, and staff provide art and crafts, quizzes and sing-a-longs. We also bring in entertainers and activities such as theatre and yoga.
